South Coast Landlord Association — September Meeting Recap
The South Coast Landlord Association held its September meeting on September 10, with a strong focus on legal issues, housing policy, and legislation affecting landlords throughout Massachusetts.
Legal Update
SCLA attorneys Andrew Ashkar and Nick Gomes discussed the organization’s new designation as the South Coast Landlord Association (SCLA) and addressed several legal issues important to property owners.
Andrew Ashkar spoke about the importance of finding and keeping good tenants. He also discussed security deposits and why, for many landlords, the legal requirements and potential liabilities associated with collecting them may outweigh the benefits.
Rent Control and Housing Policy
Doug Quattrochi of MassLandlords, who has been actively involved in opposing rent control efforts in Massachusetts, discussed the continuing debate over rent control and the possibility that the issue could return to the ballot.
The discussion included concerns about the potential effects of rent control on housing availability, new construction, and investment in rental housing.
